
Pole dancing popular at “The Dime”

Back in the day, the
phrase “pole dancing” held a less than savory connotation. In fact, for most
pre-Gen Xers, the image of pole dancing pretty much went hand in hand with that
of seedy strip joints and bachelors’ parties gone wild. But that was then, this
is now, and these days, pole dancing is not only an acceptable form of
entertainment in bars and nightclubs, it’s considered great exercise for women,
men and even children. Pole dancing enthusiasts claim that it’s nothing more
than an alternative type of aerobic work-out that increases upper body strength
while toning the body as a whole. ...more
City considers Orono-Old Town
collaboration

A proposed merger of
Old Town’s and Orono’s recreation programs was the topic of discussion between
the Old Town City Council and the Parks and Recreation Committee at a joint
workshop last Thursday.
Old Town city
manager Peggy Daigle said that a collaboration with Orono would mean more
opportunities for quality recreation programs. Old Town’s current projected
revenue for its recreation programs is $40,000.

Spike strip ends high speed
chase

A man
who stole a tractor-trailer truck from Dysart’s in Hermon and then led
police on a high speed chase through Bangor and Orono on Sunday
afternoon ended his joy ride in the Penobscot County Jail.

According to
Lt. Steve Hunt of the Bangor Police Department, the truck was reported stolen
from the parking lot of Dysart’s truck stop at 12:30. Shortly afterwards, Veazie
Police Chief Mark Leonard saw the truck on Elm Street and tried to stop it.
Orono Town Council grills pub
owner, moves forward with bow-hunting

Funding
$600,000 for the construction of a new public library and issues surrounding
alcohol consumption at a couple of local businesses were the main topics at a
regular meeting of the Orono Town Council Monday night.
A succession of
enthusiastic Orono residents spoke out in favor of the construction of what
would be the first free-standing library in the town’s 200 year history. David
Chase, co-chair of the Orono Public Library Foundation, told the Council that
the new library was needed because more space was needed for items like new

City Council discusses future of former Erland Sleight School

The Old Town City Council met Monday night to discuss several business
items on the city’s agenda. Among the business items up for discussion
was the future of the Erland Sleight School on Main Street, formerly
used as a training center when Georgia-Pacific owned the Old Town mill.
The school is currently owned by Red Shield, Environmental, LLC, which
purchased the mill last fall with a loan from the city. As part of Red
Shield’s negotiations with the city, it agreed to sell the former Erland
Sleight school to the city for $30,000.

Rapper arrested after set at SOMA
February 1, 2007
Duane Narvel Brown, a 21 year-old rapper performing under the name “D
Black” was arrested outside the Bear Brew Pub in Orono last Saturday.
Police departments from Bangor and Orono, assisted by the Maine State
Police, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the State Fire Marshal’s
Office, took part in the arrest of Brown when he exited the building
after performing at SOMA, the pub’s second floor live entertainment
