Benefit events planned for ailing police dispatcher

When Old Town police dispatcher Brad Libby lost his job to municipal budget cuts last July, he had no idea that he would soon be faced with an even harder blow. Burt shortly after he was laid-off, he learned that his liver was failing. Now, six months later, doctors have told Libby that his liver is dying and that he needs a transplant in order to survive. Even more distressing, the diagnosis has rendered him officially “disabled”, effectively ending his unemployment benefits. ...more

 The gymnasium at the Herbert Sargent Community Center has reopened after city officials closed it following the discovery of asbestos last November. The asbestos was discovered on Nov.22, when a small area under the basketball hoops broke off from the lower portion of the wall.  ...more

UMaine hopes to compost at Rogers Farm

The Old Town Planning Board will hold a public hearing to discuss whether to change Old Town’s zoning ordinance to allow special composting privileges for the University of Maine. Old Town code enforcement officer Charlie Henonien said that the University of Maine wants to bring food waste to Rogers Farm in order to compost it, but that would mean a zoning change in the area.   ...more
