fans, get ready to say “I knew ‘em when” after the Old Town High School’s
Pokeberry Players head to Rhode Island to represent Maine in the New England
Theatre Festival in April. The talented six-member cast of Eugene Ionesco’s “The
Bald Soprano” earned the number one ranking at the Eastern Regional Drama
Festival at MDI High School on March 9 and 10. Last weekend, they performed at
the state drama festival in Bangor, copping top honors and taking home four
judges’ awards, including ones for “outstanding ensemble cast”, “use of masks”,
and two for technical work. Cast members Alex Yates and Maggie Campbell were
also named to the All-Festival Cast. Now, the troupe will head to Warwick, Rhode
Island to perform for a new audience.

Red Shield eyes ethanol production

Four new
workers were added to the payroll at Red Shield Environmental, LLC on Monday,
according to human resources director Dan Bird.
“We hired four new
hourly workers on Monday, basically to put flesh on the bones of the maintenance
department as part of our general plan to restart the pulp mill,” Bird said.
Red Shield bought the
former Georgia-Pacific mill in Old Town last September after G-P closed it the
previous March, putting over 400 employees out of work and sending a negative
economic ripple through 40 other towns. Since purchasing the mill, Red Shield
had hired 55 workers, some of them former employees of G-P.

No timetable set for PIN Rx sale

There is no
set definite timetable for the completion of the sale of PIN Rx to I Care
Pharmacy, according to Trish Riley, director of the Governor’s Office of Health
Policy and Finance.
I Care
Pharmacy, a branch of T & G LLC located in Ft. Fairfield, is in the process of
purchasing PIN Rx, which is under investigation for allegedly illegally filling
Internet prescriptions for controlled substances. Two pharmacists who were
working at PIN Rx when the allegations were made may face disciplinary action
from the Maine Board of Pharmacy. ...more
Boiler

Further
testing is need to determine when Red Shield will be allowed to burn
construction and demolition debris (C and D) in its biomass boiler, according to
Ed Logue of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
On Monday, Logue said
that an “air compliance person” was on site to check on the progress of repairs
to the boiler following two incidents in which soot fell on the property of some
Bradley residents. The boiler was shut down last week so that the source of the
problem could be located and repairs could be made. After work was done on the
soot collection system, the boiler was restarted on Friday.

Club director receives national award

Carla Fearon
has been recognized by the Board of Directors of the Penobscot Nation Boys and
Girls Club for her work on behalf of the organization. On Feb, 14, Ron Gurley,
chairman of the Native American National Advisory Committee, presented Fearon
with the Native American Service to Youth Award, which is the committee’s

DEP investigation of Red Shield ash
continues

Since some
Bradley residents complained of soot residue collecting inside their cars and
falling on their property last week, The Maine Department of Environmental
Protection has launched an investigation into the content of the ash from the
biomass boiler being used by Red Shield, according to DEP spokesman Ed Logue.
